Exploring Traditions: Do Yakuza Wives Embrace Tattoos?

Over a span of six years, a French photographer embarked on a captivating project called “I Give You My Life,” focusing on women who were married to Yakuza members. Through her lens, she unveiled the clandestine aspects of these women’s lives within the Japanese underworld, shedding light on their striking tattooed bodies. This documentation was undertaken until February 25, 2020, offering an intriguing glimpse into the world of Yakuza wives and their unique tattoo culture.

In the realm of the Yakuza, an organized crime syndicate in Japan, the majority of its members are men. The presence of women within this secretive world is limited, and those who are recognized tend to be the spouses of high-ranking leaders. These wives hold a distinct title, known as “ane-san” (姐さん), which translates to “older sister” in English. This term not only signifies their status within the organization but also emphasizes their role in providing support and guidance to the Yakuza family.
