What Is The Meaning Of Diamond Head?

Diamond Head, located on the picturesque Hawaiian island of Oʻahu, is a remarkable geological formation known to the local Hawaiians as Lēʻahi (pronounced [leːˈʔɐhi]). The name Lēʻahi is thought to have an intriguing origin, likely stemming from the combination of two Hawaiian words: “lae,” meaning browridge or promontory, and “ʻahi,” which refers to a tuna. This name is aptly chosen because the ridgeline of Diamond Head closely resembles the distinctive dorsal fin of a tuna fish. Thus, Diamond Head’s name carries with it a visual homage to the natural world, highlighting the unique and striking shape of this volcanic tuff cone.

Are There Diamonds In Diamond Head?

Is there a cache of precious diamonds hidden within the iconic Diamond Head crater? Referred to as Lēʻahi, which translates to “brow of the tuna” in Hawaiian, this geological formation earned its misleading name when 19th-century British sailors mistook the sparkling minerals on its slopes for valuable diamonds. However, upon closer inspection, it became apparent that these glittering treasures were, in fact, shiny calcite crystals devoid of any significant monetary worth. This case of mistaken identity left the crater devoid of the precious gems that its name might suggest.
